Are you wanting to get into the exciting world of stranded colorwork, but not ready to take on managing 2 yarns at a time? Ready to start knitting in the round with dpn’s, Magic Loop or 2 circs (or try a way that’s new to you?) Here’s a fun way to learn a lot of the basic skills, one yarn at a time, and create a gorgeous hat.

The pattern is Arrows Abound by Melynda Bernardi, available on Ravelry at the shop, and it includes a matching cowl and mittens. I will provide an extra chart to turn it into leaves for a holiday feel.

Instructor:  Jean

Prerequisites:  advanced beginner -- comfortable with knit and purl, cast on, and bind off

Skills Learned: colorwork/stranded knitting, small-circumference knitting, yarn management

Materials Required: You will need 2 colors (3 for the leafy hat) of worsted yarn. (Malabrigo Rios is gorgeous for this.) Make sure there is enough contrast for the colorwork to show. Total hat (including pompom) was 80 gm which is 168 yards of Rios. Needles needed by most people are sizes US 7 and US 5 dpn’s OR long circular (at least 32”) OR 2 circulars, any length. If you know you knit very tightly or loosely, you should swatch first to find what size needles you need to get about 20 sts/4”. [Note 1. These are NOT the sizes called for in the pattern because we are using worsted yarn. Note 2. You could do the body of the hat easily on the 2 sizes of 16”-long needles, and transfer to another circular technique during the crown decreases, but if you want to start learning the new technique earlier, let’s start with it from the beginning.]
