SOS Shawl
Thu 1/20 & 2/10
3-5 pm

For the safety of our students and teachers, if you are not fully vaccinated, please let us schedule you a private Zoom class.

Despite the name of the pattern, this is a very joyful shawl, especially when it is showing off that gorgeous multicolor sock yarn you can’t resist buying and don’t know what to do with. Sara named it after the way we knit whatever is going on in our lives into the project we are working on. I know I am flooded by memories when I pick up one of my hand-knits. And in this shawl, memories are, almost literally, woven in using the Swedish Weave stitch, creating striped bands that purposely don’t meet in the middle. The picot bind off is a sweet finishing touch.

Instructor: Jean Carter

Prerequisites:  Basic knitting skills

Homework:  Work a gauge swatch out of the background yarn and block it to see if you are close to pattern gauge. The size is not critical for a shawl, but a big difference in gauge will result in different yarn requirements.

Skills Learned:  Garter tab cast on, the Swedish weave stitch, increasing, color-carrying for garter stripes, picot bindoff.

Materials Required:  Song of Sorrow pattern by Sara Gresbach. US size 4 circular needles or the size that gets you closest to gauge. (40” long is recommended.)  420 yards of background color fingering weight yarn, 240 yards of multicolor fingering weight yarn. Be sure to pick a very plain MC and a highly contrasting yarn for the background. We want to see those stripes.

All class materials must be purchased from Warm n Fuzzy.
